I hate that my first Slice for 2013 will be short; however, I have a good excuse. I have a new family member living with me. My brother’s son, Pete, moved in last Friday. Both of his parents are dead–my brother died when Pete was three, and my sister-in-law died this past September.
Pete’s been just…floating, for lack of a better word. Not working, not going to college, not hanging out with people his age. So, I decided to take over his life. Get him on the “right track” (whatever THAT means!! Heehee). As a start, he’s had daily “assignments” which he’s completed with not much complaining.
Tonight was a reward: Barnes & Noble!! Yay!
And now it’s late & we just got home a half hour ago. I’m too old to be up this late!!

So sorry to hear about your brother and sister-in-law, Stephanie. I’m glad that Pete has you, and you him.

I was last-minute slicing tonight, too, and have way less of a valid excuse. So sorry to hear about the losses in your family, and wishing you (and Pete) well as you figure out how life looks from here.

Maybe he could write Slice of Life responses with you, agreeing to share or exchange responses periodically? It might be a good way to find understanding and a lifelong bond.

He’s a lucky boy to have someone help him get his life on track. So much sadness in a young man’s life might make one want to give up, but with someone in his corner he will see life is good. A trip to Barnes and Noble was a reward to who?

We all need to have someone beside us and with us as we wander through this maze of life. I will keep you both in my prayers as you navigate new waters – like the seas of Barnes and Noble!

Floating is such a great word choice here. What kinds of daily assignments are you giving?

Floating as in not doing anything to better himself: no driver’s license, no job, no college. Just sort of waiting around the house for something to happen rather than take control of his life. The “assignments” are just life things. I asked him to fill out an application, print out his résumé & take it to the grocery store he’s applying at then take it there and talk to the manager. This week, he’s going to get his license and apply at some other places around town.
